The 3+1 Questions of the Grave…

وَقَالَ الرَّسُولُ يَا رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوْمِي اتَّخَذُوا هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ مَهْجُورًا

And the Messenger (Muhammad ) will say: “O my Lord! Verily, my people deserted this Islam Mosaic Qur’an (Surah Al-Furqan: 30)

I think it is commonly known among Muslims that we will be questioned in our graves after we die, but the hadith that is commonly narrated is about three questions. However, there is also a fourth question that we will be asked:

“Two angels come to him, make him sit up and ask him, ‘Who is your Lord?’ He [the believing soul] will reply, ‘My Lord is Allah.’ They will then ask, ‘What is your religion?’ and he will reply, ‘My religion is Islam.’ They will ask, ‘Who is this man who was sent among you?’ and he will say, ‘He is the Messenger of Allah.’ They will then ask, ‘What was the source of your knowledge?’ and he will reply, ‘I have read Allah’s Book, believed in it, and declared it to be true.’”  (Sahih Bukhari, vol. 2, pp.257-258, no.456)

How will we be able to answer that question in the grave if we have not read the Qur’an or taken the time to understand it?

Allah’s mercy is infinite and encompasses all things.
May Allah have mercy on you and the ummah of Muhammad S

  3. I’ve searched the Hadith in Sahih Bukhari. But the wordings are as follows:

    Volume 2, Book 23, Number 456 :
Narrated by Anas bin Malik (r.)
Allah’s Apostle PBUH & his progeny said, “When (Allah’s) slave is put in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask, ‘What did you use to say about this man (i.e. Muhammad PBUH & his progeny)?’ The faithful Believer will say, ‘I testify that he is Allah’s slave and His Apostle.’ Then they will say to him, ‘Look at your place in the Hell Fire; Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it.’ So he will see both his places.” [Qatada (r.) said, "We were informed that his grave would be made spacious." Then Qatada (r.) went back to the narration of Anas (r.) who said;] Whereas a hypocrite or a non-believer will be asked, “What did you use to say about this man PBUH & his progeny?” He will reply, “I do not know; but I used to say what the people used to say.” So they will say to him, “Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance.” Then he will be hit with iron hammers once, that he will send such a cry as everything near to him will hear, except Jinns and human beings. (See Hadith No. 422).

It will be highly appreciated if you kindly let us know the actual reference of the hadith you mentioned above. Waas salaam!

  4. Alhamdulillah

  5. Please correct the wordings of above mentioned Hadith. The correct hadith is as follows :

    “Narrated Anas bin Malik:

Allah’s Apostle said, “When (Allah’s) slave is put in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask, ‘What did you use to say about this man (i.e. Muhammad)?’ The faithful Believer will say, ‘I testify that he is Allah’s slave and His Apostle.’ Then they will say to him, ‘Look at your place in the Hell Fire; Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it.’ So he will see both his places.” (Qatada said, “We were informed that his grave would be made spacious.” Then Qatada went back to the narration of Anas who said;) Whereas a hypocrite or a non-believer will be asked, “What did you use to say about this man.” He will reply, “I do not know; but I used to say what the people used to say.” So they will say to him, “Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Quran).” Then he will be hit with iron hammers once, that he will send such a cry as everything near to him will hear, except Jinns and human beings. (Sahih Bukhari 2:456)”

  6. In which language will we be questioned in our grave

    • Asalam WR WB
The following excerpt is from Dar ul Iftaa:
There are no language barriers in the hereafter. We know that the people of Jannah will speak Arabic, and those who did not understand Arabic in this world would understand and be fluent with it in Jannah. We can therefore infer that the same will apply to the grave as well.

  7. allah bohar bade rehmatoh karim hai or allah k jis bande nai ya page banaye hai usse allah bohat bohat bohat kamiya bhi atat farmaye ameen unka zindagi mai humesha kushi rahe or unko allah humesha nek rah dhikaye ameen
