Prophet SAWS on The Life Span of the Ummah… (We’re nearing the end)

flatline The Prophet SAWS said “The life span of my Ummah will not extend past 1500 years.”

(Suyuti, Al-Kashf ‘an Mujawazat Hadhihi al-Ummah al-Alf, ‘Al-Hawi lil-Fatawi’, Suyuti. 2/248, (Arabic) 4/262, Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Kitab al-`Ilal, P. 89).

Imam As-Suyuti (d.911 AH) said:

“From what the narrations reveal is that the age of this ummah extends beyond a thousand but it doesnt exceed in increase another 500 in actuality beyond this thousand.”

(in his book in his “Risalah Al-Kashf ‘an mujawazt hadehel ommah al alf”, or “treastie on revealing of the proceeding of this nation beyond the thousand, ” page 206)

The Prophet (sallalahu alayhi wassalam) said: “The life of this Ummah will exceed 1000, yet will be limited by 1500 years.”

(Shaikh Muhammad ibn `Abd ar-Rasul Barzanji (d.1103 AH), Al-Isha`ah li Ashrat as-Sa`ah, p. 299)

Hafiz Ibn al-Hajr al-Asqalani (d.852 AH) said:

“And it is evident  that the lasting of this Islamic nation is somewhat a thousand years, this is because the age of the Jewish nation is equivalent to that of the time periods of the Christian and Muslim ages combined, and the people of transmission (ahl an naql) have agreed that the period of the Jews till the advent of Allah (SWT)’s final Apostle Muhammad SAWS was more than 2000 years, and the span of the age of the Christians was 600 years from them..and also this narration points the fact about how little of the age of this world has remained.”

  1. False hadith, akhi: http://www.islamqa.com/en/ref/33689

    • Jazakallah Khayr for the post.

For the information of the Muslims, it is important to note what ‘weak’ hadith means and that it nonetheless still provides a valuable source of information and the majority of scholars permitted its usage and narrated the weak hadith themselves (as an example of this hadith). Many scholars prefer the usage of weak hadith over qiyas/analogy (Hanafis, Shafi’s, etc.)

Imam Bukhari used many weak narrations in his Adab al-Mufrad as well as Imam Muslim in his collection, as long as the narrator wasn’t accused of lying or forging and they didn’t have to do with Shariah rulings and promoted virtuous deeds.

Imam Nawawi said: It is permissible to act (with caution) on such matters which are borne out of weak (Da’ef) Ahadeeth.

If these hadith were good enough for the hadith masters and scholars of our deen…

  2. Yes akhi you’re right. But, weak ahadeeth that contradict shari’ah are not to be taken seriously, such as this one. I mean Imam al-Suyuti using this hadith pretty much pin points the time when the world will come to an end.

Let me ask you. Do you positively believe that the world will end in 70 years since it’s 1430 AH now? If so, then doesn’t it go against Allah’s saying that only He knows when the day of judgment will occur.

Anyhow, your point is absolutely correct that the time is near, wAllahu a’lam.

    • Asalam.

Brother I’m not an expert, but from my understanding, the end of this world doesn’t equal Judgement Day (of which only Allah SWT alone in his infinite wisdom has knowledge of.)

Similarly, the beginning of this world doesn’t equal the beginning of creation [as angels and jinns were created before humans and similarly they have to be destroyed after humans.]

The hadith is referring to the lifespan of the Ummah of the Prophet SAWS.

I don’t understand why the Shaykh on IslamQA equated them and maybe if you are in touch with him you can clarify.

      Allah knows best.

  3. Assalam alaikum,

The hadith is talking about the ummah ending at that time, not the end of the world. As you may know, Islam will be lifted from the world such that a person would say, “I heard my elders saying ‘Allah, Allah’ but I don’t know what it means.” And that the Hour will be established on the worst of mankind.

Given that an abundance of the signs have come to pass (women dressed but naked, arabs building lofty towers, etc) it is not far fetched that our ummah is very close to the end.

    Wa assalam alaikum
